Matt Chapman Giants Agree To Six Year 151m Extension

Matt Chapman, Giants Agree to Six-Year, $151M Extension

Long-Term Stability

The San Francisco Giants have secured a key piece of their future by signing third baseman Matt Chapman to a six-year, $151 million extension.

The deal ensures that Chapman, a four-time Gold Glove winner and two-time All-Star, will remain in San Francisco through the 2029 season.

Chapman's extension is the latest in a series of moves by the Giants to bolster their roster for the long term, following recent extensions for outfielder Mike Yastrzemski and first baseman Brandon Belt.

Elite Defense, Consistent Offence

Chapman is widely regarded as one of the best defensive third basemen in baseball.

In 2023, he led all MLB third basemen in Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) and Ultimate Zone Rating (UZR).

At the plate, Chapman has averaged 29 home runs and 92 RBIs over the past three seasons.

Significant Upgrade

The Giants acquired Chapman from the Oakland Athletics in March 2023 in a trade that sent prospects A.J. Puk and Greg Deichmann to Oakland.

Chapman has been a significant upgrade for the Giants, providing a reliable presence in the infield and a dangerous bat in the lineup.

Team Optimism

The Giants are optimistic about their chances of competing for a World Series title in the coming years with Chapman as a cornerstone of the team.

General Manager Farhan Zaidi expressed his excitement about the extension, saying, "Matt is a special player who makes us a better team in all facets of the game. We're thrilled to have him as a Giant for the long term."

Contract Details

The six-year, $151 million extension includes a full no-trade clause and a $25 million signing bonus.

Chapman's average annual salary of $25.16 million makes him the highest-paid third baseman in MLB.
